A total of 3,110 cyclists lined out this morning in Bormio to tackle one of the toughest amateur long-distance Sportifs on the international scene: the Granfondo Stelvio Santini.

Our founder Pietro Santini himself was waiting at the finish-line as the cyclists arrived to personally present each and every one with the prized Santini ‘Finisher’ cap. A fantastic souvenir for the 2372 competitors from 35 nations that finished the three Granfondo Stelvio Santini courses.

Among the riders competing on the Short Course was Antonio Rossi who took gold at both the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics in sprint canoeing. The now-Councillor for Youth Sports and Politics crossed the line in a time of 03:13:09 al 59th position in the overall rankings.

The rider that clocked the best time for the Long Course was Stefano Cecchini of the team La Bagarre – who finished the 151.3-kilometre ride in 05:20:04. The top spot in the women’s standings went to Marina Ilmer of the team ARSV Vinschgau who clocked on overall time of 06:17:42. Cristina Lambrugo of the team Somec MG.K VIS-LGL and Patrizia Piancastelli of the team KTM ASD Scatenati crossed the line second and third.

Victory on the Medium Course went to Davide Lombardi of the team Cicloteam San Ginese in a time of 04:27:02, while the top women’s finisher was Erica Magnaldi of the team De Rosa Santini in a time of 4:48:39.

The Short Route standings were topped by Daniele Bergamo in a time of 02:21:27 and by Olga Cappiello of the Team De Rosa Santini in a time of 02:44:59.

The Grandfondo is also an environmentally friendly event with partners like the WWF’s European Alpine Programme’s wolf protection programme. In fact, the organisers added an extra 100 entries to the sold out event and part of the proceeds from their sale was donated to the not-for-profit organisation that promotes wolf awareness and protection in the Italian Alps.
