La Sweat - Monica
Who are you, and what do you do? Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Monica Merced, and I’m proud to be entering my fifth year as a rider for LA Sweat! I currently call Austin, Texas, home, where I live with my partner, Ben, and our adorable cat, Meatball. By day, I’m a GIS Coordinator for a grant management firm based in Austin—basically, I make maps and help bring data to life. When I’m not training or working, you can find me in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, on my yoga mat finding balance, or daydreaming about my next big adventure. Italy is definitely at the top of my list!
What is your favourite place to train, and what makes it special for you?
My favorite place to train is in the Alicante region of Spain. My partner’s family lives in a charming village called Orba, just west of Dénia and near the iconic climb, Coll de Rates. We make it a point to visit at least once a year! What makes it so special is the perfect weather—sunny and mild, even in winter—which creates ideal conditions for long rides. The roads are full of fellow cyclists, as it’s a popular training spot for teams from around the world. The combination of stunning scenery, vibrant cycling culture, and a connection to family makes it truly unbeatable.
What is your favourite Santini item, and why?
Choosing just one favorite is so tough, but if I had to pick, it would be the Guard Nimbus rain jacket! It’s been an absolute lifesaver on multiple occasions. When the team traveled to Belgium this past spring, it became our go-to piece of clothing on the bike. More recently, I took it with me to Colombia, where it rained almost every day—it was key for staying comfortable. What makes it even better is how packable it is—it folds into itself, which is a huge bonus when you’re riding in unpredictable mountain weather. It’s the perfect blend of function, convenience, and reliability!
What Santini piece or accessory do you consider essential for winter?
For winter riding, my go-to essentials are my team edition thermal jersey and Fine Lite vest. In Austin, the weather can swing from mild to seriously cold in a single day, so layering is key! The vest is a standout because it packs down so small, making it easy to take on and off as temperatures change. For those cold, rainy days, the Vega Dry bib tights are absolutely unbeatable. Being waterproof and fleece-lined, they keep me warm, dry, and comfortable no matter how bad the weather gets. These pieces make winter training not just bearable, but enjoyable!
What Santini piece or accessory do you consider essential for summer?
Our team jerseys, without a doubt! I definitely put the 'sweat' in LA Sweat, especially living in central Texas where summers are hot and humid. These jerseys are incredibly breathable and lightweight, making them perfect for staying cool during tough rides. Plus, I love that they’re made from recycled materials—it’s a great feeling knowing my gear is both high-performing and eco-friendly.
